One Person’s Trash is Another’s Treasure

People are lined up hours before the doors open. All are hoping to find the perfect piece of furniture, an accent lamp for their home, or an outfit for an upcoming event. This big event happens only once in the fall. Ready, set, go! Welcome to the Christ Church Winnetka Rummage Sale!

For the past 92 years, the Rummage Sale has been a staple of Winnetka, Illinois, 30 minutes north of Chicago. There are two events: one large event in the fall and one smaller half-day event in the summer. Nearly 400 church and community volunteers staff the Rummage Sales, including Ohio Zeta Robin Howse Anstaett, who has been volunteering for 25 years!

This is a year-round volunteer role for Robin. Twice a week she sorts through donations. She is excited to coordinate one of the most coveted spaces of the sale: the French Room, which is known for its designer women’s clothing.

The sale features high quality items at low costs and attracts a wide variety of cliental. They raise approximately $300,000 in a year! After paying their expenses, the church is able to donate funds to 50-60 charitable organizations in the Chicago area for them to do their own good work.

Throughout the year, In addition to the two official events, the church has provided items to communities in need such as veterans, refugee groups, and the homeless. Robin is proud that the church was able to provide 90 boxes of clothing to those affected by Hurricane Katrina a few years ago.

It shows that Robin has philanthropic service in her heart. “I have been fortunate in life,” she said. “And if you have been fortunate, you should share the good fortune with others too.” Thank you for all you do, Robin!
