Transitioning the Seniors

“Alright seniors – you’re up!” Snap after snap, I took photos of different groups of sisters during Bid Day at the University of Louisville. One shot was especially special – the excitement of the seniors realizing this was the last Bid Day and the sad “ahhhhs” of the rest of the chapter realizing they were losing an incredible group of women. One of the standouts in the class is Kentucky Alpha Leigha Moore who is serving as the Senior Member Coordinator.

When Leigha decided to participate in recruitment, she was looking to be in environment that is empowering. Pi Phi stood out to Leigha as the group that was run by women for women and gave her the feelings of women empowerment she was seeking.

Pi Phi has done a lot for Leigha by pushing her out of her comfort zone through participation in chapter events and giving her transferable skills – communication, delegation, being detail-oriented – which are ideal in her future career as a paralegal or lawyer.

Repeated along the ceiling rim in the Kentucky Alpha chapter room are our core values. “I live my life as a Pi Phi,” says Leigha, which reminded me of her favorite value: Personal and Intellectual Growth. Leigha has seen the benefits of her membership and wants to give back to the chapter by leading this group of seniors this upcoming year.

There are a few seniors graduating with Leigha that are worried about what they want to do in the future. The Pi Phi for Life program assists in helping Pi Phis stay connected with the Fraternity even after the leave the chapter and help them transition into the world — because we know it is hard. Seniors participate in Pi Phi for Life Signature Workshops developing action plans for how the seniors will serve their chapter in the coming year and have the opportunity to view videos such “Translating Your Pi Phi Experience to the Professional World” or “Benefits of Alumnae Life” as part of the program.

Leigha is proud of the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of others, especially her fellow seniors, as they transition into life after graduation.
