Arizona Beta Alison Kelly has served three terms on her chapter’s Executive Board: as Vice President of Finance, Vice President of Administration and as the outgoing Chapter President. With the leadership skills she has learned while at Arizona State University (ASU), she is proud to leave the chapter and move on to her next position.
As a junior, Alison served on a spring break mission trip to Nicaragua with Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS). On her trip, Alison helped to paint the local church and pass out clothing to the community. “I saw the people who are poor in Nicaragua show humility, thankfulness and rawness,” she said. “They were vulnerable and it opened my eyes to (our) campus and what was missing.”
Alison wanted to come back to Pi Phi to build authentic friendships and intentional friendships with her sisters. She did this by leading a Bible study allowing a space for the women to be real and talk about struggles in society and ASU. “They should build each other up as women,” she said.
Alison has always loved serving people, but did not initially incorporate the faith aspect in her work, so she decided to apply to become a FOCUS missionary. During her interviews, she used her experiences in Pi Phi as examples for questions about leadership, respecting authority and willingness to listen. Alison did a great job and has been offered the opportunity to join FOCUS after she graduates this May! She heads off to training in June where she will find out which campus in the United States she is assigned to work with. Good luck Alison! I cannot wait to hear where you will be making an impact next year.
