Challenge Yourself and your Peers

Arizona Beta Mija Maslar knew the moment she walked through Palm Walk – the beautiful walkway in the middle of campus – that Arizona State University (ASU) was the school for her. With more than 80,000 students enrolled at ASU, it can be absolutely overwhelming for anyone. Mija is from Peoria, Arizona, 30 minutes from the ASU campus, so she could easily keep to her close-knit community back home. But she wanted more out of her college experience.

It was not initially in her plan to join in formal recruitment, but her high school dance and cheer coach encouraged her to participate. After joining Pi Beta Phi, Mija realized how much Fraternity and Sorority Life allows one to narrow down a big campus and have a smaller community at ASU. Mija is extremely thankful for this and began to figure out how to be a positive influence within her chapter.

As a sophomore, Mija served as Vice President of Administration. She values this experience because of the nature of the role taught her how to be more relatable and personable. “It tested my leadership skills and the way I interact with people,” she said. Her positive experience serving on the Executive Board encouraged Mija to serve as Chapter President in order to further allow her to test her own leadership. “In order to get better, change is necessary,” Mija said. “You need to challenge yourself and your peers.”

When asked what legacy she wants to leave behind, Mija said she wants to be remembered for “making people feel like they mattered and that they were a necessary block needed to build the chapter.”
