Last spring I learned about our newly chartered Long Island Nassau/Suffolk Alumnae Club and knew I had to make it out there to help welcome this new group and engage them in the celebration of our 150th anniversary fun!
This is how I met Ohio Lambda Rebecca “Becca” Dreyer. Becca was instrumental in chartering the club, which will allow the 300+ local alumnae an exciting avenue to remain active in Pi Phi. But this is not the first time Becca has been influential in starting something new in Pi Phi. In fall 2012, Becca was part of the colonizing class of Pi Beta Phi at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).
Becca fell in love with our Pi Beta Phi core values and was touched by the wonderful alumnae that she met as part of the interview process. It struck her as something amazing that women, who been out of college for years, would make a trip to a school they were not familiar with to help promote and grow Pi Phi. Becca is grateful for Pi Phi and she attributes a lot of it to the women with whom she found immediate connections and bonds. One favorite story from Becca is the relationship she developed with Ohio Lambda Sarah Hyman.
Becca and Sarah’s parents were friends for a long time in the Boston area. But when Becca was a baby, her family moved to Pittsburgh and the young girls lost touch. During recruitment in 2013, Becca kept hearing the name of Pi Phi legacy “Sarah Hyman.” When Sarah pledged Pi Phi, Becca immediately reached out to her as she knew this was the daughter of her parent’s friends. The two immediately had an incredible connection, just like when they were young, and Becca was thrilled, “Pi Phi brought us together almost two decades later.” To seal the connection further, Becca had the privilege of having Sarah as her Pi Phi Little Sister.
Pi Phi enriched Becca’s life in so many ways that she continued to be involved after graduation, first in the Cleveland-West Alumnae Club and then in chartering our newest alumnae club. I am so thankful for exceptional women, like Becca, who continue to help grow our Fraternity.
