With the energy around the Olympic Games and the friendliness of the people, it is no wonder thousands of people tune in to watch and listen as elite athletes compete for their countries. For some lucky individuals the opportunity to attend in person adds a new layer of excitement around the worldwide event.
Through Ball State University’s Department of Journalism Indiana Zetas Jennifer Firoved and Abby Lutz are serving as student journalists during the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The program, called “Ball State at the Games,” has sent a group of students to cover the Games and its “untold stories” to London, Sochi, and now Rio.
Abby wants to be a TV reporter, so interviewing people and putting together news packages fits into her future career aspirations well. “It is a real-life experience that is molding me into a professional and I absolutely love it,“ she said.
“I’m a Journalism Graphics major so it is directly related to what I want to do in the future and this actually gave me the opportunity to get more clips for my portfolio and learn more about motion graphics,” said Jennifer.
And how do they feel about having a Pi Phi sister with them in Rio? “Having a Pi Phi sister makes the trip so much more fun. We actually ended up sharing a bunk bed in our hostel. It’s such a great experience and I’m so glad I am able to share it with someone that is so similar to me,“ said Abby.
When I asked, “Who was the most interesting person you have met at these Olympics?,” Jennifer replied, “Allison Brock of the U.S. Dressage team. I had the opportunity to meet and then interview her, and her story is truly proof that if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish your dreams. “
We’re so excited to have two talented sisters covering the Games this year! To read more about what these women and the rest of their team is up to in Rio, follow Ball State at The Games on Twitter at @BSUatthegames.
