When Illinois Beta-Delta Katherine “Kayti” Everette was studying abroad in Spain, she came across the Spanish phrase in “Busca tu camino en la Luz” posted on a chicken wire wall. It translates to “find your way in the light,” which Kayti has adopted as her motto for life. It serves as a reminder to always stay positive.
Kayti heard of Knox College through her maternal grandparents, who attended college there in 1940s. Primarily interested in small liberal arts colleges, Kayti went for a campus visit and immediately knew it was the right fit. However, the transition to college life was not easy. During her first year, Kayti found it difficult to establish space on campus, so she decided to participate in recruitment.
Kayti had a great experience with recruitment — she liked everyone! Kayti was especially torn thinking of the memory of her late grandma, Illinois Beta-Delta Sally Berk Roe. She sought the advice of her mother. Kayti’s mom said, “Your grandpa is excited for you no matter where you end up because you are at Knox [College].”
When she opened her bid card and saw Pi Beta Phi, she was thrilled. She immediately told her family, including her grandpa, who cried. He graciously sent Kayti her grandma’s arrow badge so she could be initiated in it. The pin, bearing her grandma’s name and initiation year 1941, is worn only on special occasions like Founders’ Day.
Kayti continues to grow her love of Pi Beta Phi by developing relationships with her sisters and enjoying experiences that college life gives her. While serving as New Member Coordiantor last year she was able to help to create these memories for the New Members. “Being a servant leader is the best,” Kayti said. “I remember how much fun I had during Angel Week and being with sisters. I wanted to cultivate that positive experience for other New Members.”
