Alabama Alpha McKenzie Davies loves being a student at Birmingham Southern College (BSC) When she toured campus, she loved the University’s focus on the whole person. “The students I met loved their classes, loved their professors AND were part of student organizations,” she says.
“I was shy and nervous,” she says about first entering college, but getting involved has allowed McKenzie to gain confidence, learn leadership, and develop strong relationships. McKenzie has made an incredible difference at BSC with some of her involvement. As a Southern Ambassador, she worked at University recruitment events, gave campus tours to prospective students, and hosted new students overnight. Serving on the Orientation Team, McKenzie helped with academic advising, assisted with class confirmations, and facilitated events to integrate new students. McKenzie also served as the Editor for Southern Academic Review publication, which is one of five student-run papers on campus. “College is about finding what you’re passionate about,” McKenzie says. “Don’t let your fear hold you back.”
It is the last semester of McKenzie’s undergraduate career, and the first semester McKenzie has not been in a leadership role in the chapter. As a New Member, McKenzie was appointed into the Junior Panhellenic role, and then she continued to serve in various Executive Council positions: Vice President of Communications, Vice President of Member Development and finally as Vice President of Membership. “It is bittersweet to not have a position, but I am confident in the younger members,” she says. “The chapter is in good hands.”
After she graduates from BSC, McKenzie will look into MD/PhD programs in clinical research in hopes of working in personal medicine. She is interested in this field, so she can work with people and make a difference in their lives. I would argue that McKenzie has already done this in her time at BSC. Good luck with everything, McKenzie!
