Called Out to be Involved

Alabama Gamma Anna Shepherd was one of the first women I met when I arrived on the campus of Auburn University (AU). As Vice President of Housing, Anna played an integral role in preparing the chapter room for my celebratory visit.

Anna is very involved on campus, so when asked what her favorite tradition is, she did not hesitate: “Callouts.” Callouts is an Auburn tradition in which students audition, tryout, or interview for certain campus organizations. Callouts occur on the Cater Hall lawn in the center of campus. Leaders of these student organizations “call out” the names of students who have been chosen to join their organization.

Anna admits to being in attendance when her name was not called, but it was oh so sweet when her name was called to be a member of the Freshman Leadership Program’s Freshman Forum. Freshman Forum are standout first years students who work with Student Government Association (SGA) who receive mentors to guide them on leadership opportunities on campus; Anna received Katie Wiloughby as a mentor. Katie is the Director for the Miss Auburn University, and now Anna is the Assistant Director.

According to the website, “The Miss Auburn University Scholarship Program provides scholarship opportunities for young women to assist in furthering their education.” This year’s winner is Susanna Bagwell who Anna has known since high school. “I was so happy when she won!” Anna said. “It is fun to work with someone I know.”

Anna is responsible for Miss Auburn University’s appearances and marketing. Anna manages events like parades, emcee gigs, judging events, and of course appearances with the Auburn mascot, Aubie the Tiger.

Since it feeds into the Miss Alabama and Miss America system, Anna will help Susanna prepare for the next set of competitions. Anna says, “[I have] done pageants my whole life, but I think I like this side better.”

Along with her role in Miss Auburn University, Anna is a member of Auburn University Modeling Board, which provides modeling and fashion prospects for students. Anna is such a great example of how getting involved on campus can provide leadership and growth opportunities.
