Continue to Build On

As I pulled up to the North Carolina Delta house, signs like “Welcome Ring Ching Roadshow”, cheers of 50+ members, and a spot designated “Park Here Libbie” greeted me. I was able to join the chapter for their “Pi Phi Gives You Wings” philanthropy event, and it was quite a night. The event welcomed hundreds of individuals to enjoy a meal of wings, and participate in a wing-eating competition and it was all thanks to the woman who orchestrated this great event Vice President of Philanthropy Grace Pittman.

Grace says she has always been service-oriented so it is no surprise she is currently serving in this role. But her service to others is not only through her involvement in Pi Beta Phi. Grace is part of a group of 15 Panhellenic women, led by North Carolina Delta and past Panhellenic President Sarah Marshall, who participated in a service project in Nicaragua this month.

The North Carolina State University Panhellenic Association is partnering with The Circle of Sisterhood buildOn Ambassador Trek. For the last semester, the group has been fundraising for construction and associated costs to build a school in Linda Vista, a rural Nicaraguan village. Grace is really excited for this opportunity and promised to keep me posted after the trip.

Last summer, Grace had the opportunity to spend seven weeks in Guatemala in a study abroad and service learning experience. She lived with a host family and her specific job was to assist in a pre-school with a Peace Corp volunteer. She helped teach English to the students and worked on the blog and website, which is something this Public Relations major enjoys.

“I got so many cool opportunities by putting myself out there,” she said. “I also learned not to be scared to ask questions or do new things.” With all these experiences, Grace looks to use her Public Relations background to work for a non-profit, where she can continue helping others.
