I thought I was in for a normal chapter meeting when I visited Texas Zeta. And I was, until the subject of intramural sports came up. Intramural sports are a big part of Baylor University (BU) and for 10 out of last 12 years, Pi Beta Phi has been Intramural Sports Champions! Each year, the winners name is added to a huge banner in the Student Life Center; it is an absolutely a symbol of pride.
While it is important to the chapter to see their name hung high on the banner, what’s even more important is that it shows how well they work together as a chapter. At BU, teams can sign up for a dodge ball tournament, flag football, or volleyball for the fall. In the spring, teams can sign up for basketball, rock climbing, wallyball, ping pong and more.
Texas Zeta Kristin Milton’s passion for intramural sports comes from playing basketball since she was five years old. “Sports teach you a lot of things life cannot teach you,” Kristin said. As Intramural Chair, Kristin leads people in a unique way, managing the Chapter’s teams and serving as a coach.
“One of the things I love about Pi Phi is that it pushes me to be better,” Kristin said. “The women are learning to lean on each other and support each other.”
Kristin shared that Texas Zeta won the basketball tournament the week prior to our conversation; this bumped Pi Phi into first place! She is working hard to keep the chapter engaged and enthused in the games because it is most important that they have fun. And of course, it would not be a bad thing to continue the Pi Phi tradition winning.
