Growing up on the lakes of Wisconsin, it is no surprise Ohio Zeta Libby Brooks is a world-class ice skater. She has always been an ice skater and, besides having an amazing name (I am totally biased!), Libby has had success as part of Miami University’s (MU) RedHawks Senior Synchronized Skating team. Because skating is something she has done her whole life, Libby is thrilled to have the chance to compete in college, too.
Although the sport is not currently in the Winter Olympics, the RedHawks participate in Olympic-level competitions all over the world. There are other synchronized skating teams in the United States, but MU has the only team based solely out of a college. Last year, during a competition in Austria, Libby’s team won second place. In a competition in Italy, they also won second place. That’s two silver medals in two international competitions. It must be wonderful to have so many amazing skaters in one place!
This past April, Libby’s team won its twelfth consecutive national title at the U.S. National Championships and earned a berth to the International Skating Union’s World Synchronized Skating Championship. The final competition of the season, similar to the Olympics, was held in Budapest, Hungary. There were 26 teams representing 21 different countries at the competition. MU’s varsity team — joined by a team from Boston — was one of only two teams representing the United States.
“Miami is ninth in the world, and that’s a pretty cool thing to say,” Libby proclaims proudly. She has every right to boast, but of course she is humble and honored to represent her school and her country.
