You can find hear these lyrics from Tim McGraw’s song “Humble and Kind” echoing from the room of Indiana Beta Madison Peraino when she needs a boost in her life. When she’s wrapped up in the chaos of living with 100 sisters in the Pi Phi house or just the day-to-day happenings of college life, this song reminds her what is most important. It is a song she listens to with her mom, so it gives her a sense of home and reminds her of two key lessons from her parents: stay grounded and do the right thing.

Madison moved to Indiana from Connecticut, so she knew finding a niche at Indiana University (IU) was important to her success in college. She found a home away from home through Pi Beta Phi Fraternity, and she has included her parents in the Fraternity as well.

In October, Indiana Beta hosted Dad’s Weekend. During the BBQ tailgate with the dads, country artist Clayton Anderson performed and serenaded the chapter. Madison loves country music, and she was exciting to see how into the performance the dads got. This was followed by a football game in which IU, the underdog, went on to beat the University of Michigan. It was a thrilling weekend for them all!

Mom’s Weekend was held in spring. Moms attended classes with their daughters, enjoyed brunch at the chapter house and a comedy show on Saturday evening. Madison and her mom also explored downtown Bloomington, Indiana, and went trail running. Her mom was delighted to join her daughter for the weekend and was excited to meet the Pi Phis as well as their mothers.

“It’s fun to know they’re having fun with it, too,” Madison said. “Our parents know each other now and are excited to celebrate with us.” It is obvious Madison is so proud of Pi Phi and now her parents are too!
