Virginia Zeta Rene Reyes was thrilled to have the opportunity to serve as Vice President of Administration (VPA) because she has a strong interest in understanding the operations of organizations. She felt that her background and expertise in this area would help her improve the position.
One of Rene’s favorite quotes is, “It’s a marathon, not a sprint.” Day by day, she did her best to accomplish the tasks assigned to the role and learned invaluable time management skills, but Rene also learned how to communicate well with others and how to develop deeper relationships with her sisters.
“[Serving as VPA has] given me perspective on what it takes to be in an executive position,” Rene said. It has also provided Rene a foundation for her professional aspirations. This bodes well for Rene, as she hopes to pursue a high-level finance or accounting management role in the future.
Rene has also utilized her experience as VPA during interviews for internships. When asked, she is able to provide real examples of conflicts that occurred and how she overcame them. A common element in all of the examples Rene gave was the support system of the executive board team and the many teamwork opportunities she experienced as a result.
Rene’s experiences as VPA and in the professional world remind us that resume great resume can open the door for an interview, but it is truly the in-person communication that truly showcases one’s personality, values, and potential fit within the organization. Rene’s hard work and great interviewing skills have paid off: she will spend this upcoming summer interning at a tax audit firm in Richmond, Virginia. Way to go, Rene!
