Feeling accomplished from executing Mississippi Beta’s successful Ring Ching Roadshow event, Vice President of Fraternity Development Taylor Myers and I sat down for lunch at the chapter house. There’s a buzz around the dining room: the women around us were laughing, studying and chatting with invited guests.
It is immediately clear that the chapter has such a high regard for the staff. “The staff make it easy,” Taylor said. “They make sure everything is in order. You cannot get by without someone asking how your day went, or if you need anything. It’s home.”
This is extremely important for Taylor who came to Ole Miss from Winston-Salem, North Carolina — 10 hours away. Coming to Ole Miss was a scary decision, but the best decision for someone who always wanted to do something different. Within Pi Phi, she met her family. “ I believe in many families in life,” Taylor said.
With a chapter of more than 400 members, it may be a surprise to some how much sisterhood occurs here. Taylor is proud that the chapter has consciously focused on getting to know each other this past year. “At College Weekend people asked, ‘do you really know all 400 people?’ And I woud say ‘Yes!’ It’s neat to get to know everyone,” she said.
One of Taylor’s favorite chapter events occurs during a Spirit Week dinner leading up to Recruitment. Women are divided into teams based on regions to dress up like their hometowns. According to Taylor, people get really into it! Some of the winners included the St. Louis group dressed in their local sports teams, the huge Texas pride and Taylor, herself, jokingly dressed as a witch as most people mistakenly think of Salem Witch Trials as her hometown. This competition lightens the mood, lowers the stres, and definitely unifies the chapter. Taylor can’t say “no” to a gift card to South Depot Taco Shop for the winner.
“We’re a group of funny girls and humor is everything,” Taylor said. “You realize Pi Phi’s personality and it makes it feel like home.”
