“We would not be married to each other if we had met in college,” Indiana Theta Gretchen Stahl Foran said with a chuckle as she talked about her recent marriage. Don’t worry, her husband feels the exact same way. Nevertheless they found love while working in the fraternity and sorority world: her for Alpha Sigma Tau and him at the North-American Interfraternity Conference.
Yes, you heard right, a Pi Phi is working at another sorority’s headquarters. While it may seem odd to some, it’s actually quite a common practice. In fact, Pi Phi Headquarters has members of at least eight other fraternities and sororities who work daily to make Pi Phi the amazing sisterhood it is today.
“Had I gone to another campus, I might not have been a Pi Phi,” said Gretchen, who is also an Alpha Phi legacy. And that’s why she finds it so rewarding to work at Alpha Sigma Tau Headquarters as its Director of Member Education. She adores Pi Phi, after all she credits the Fraternity to getting her where she is today, but she also knows that sororities are all similar and are all dealing with the same set of issues.
Gretchen also continues to work with Pi Beta Phi as a volunteer, both as AAC Chair of the Indiana Gamma Chapter at Butler University in her hometown of Indianapolis, but also as a new Critical Conversations Speaker Series Facilitator. Since working with college students and education, she’s always had an interest in alcohol and its effects and she knows this program will be wide-reaching. Gretchen jumped on the opportunity to get involved with Pi Phi on a more national level.
Gretchen said she’s lucky to have a husband who’s so supportive of her Pi Phi volunteer work, but the fact that he’s also so involved with fraternity and sorority life helps him understand her love for Pi Phi. Even if they do have to implement “no work talk” evenings every once in a while.
