Only in her sophomore year in college, Michigan Alpha Abigail Allen has become active in various groups on “Up the Hill,” the term lovingly given to the campus as it is literally “up the hill” from the Michigan Alpha Chapter house. When she is not serving on the boards of The Federalists Society, College Republicans or 1844 Society, she can be found at the Pi Phi house bonding with her sisters. She attributes a lot of her successes to her parents.
When she was old enough to choose what she wanted to major in, it came naturally to Abigail: politics and history. Growing up, Abigail experienced the joys of having a stay-at-home dad. Her dad is a big role model in her life so his interests in the subject helped to cultivate a love of the politics and history within Abigail. “His character is incredible,” says Abigail. “He’s always been there for me. My dad is my best friend.” Dad and daughter would read historical biographies and political commentaries together, and then discuss them. When she was old enough to choose books to read, she still chose similar books because of the shared interest with her father.
As Abigail began the search for colleges, Hillsdale College came out of nowhere. It was so unique, and Abigail was sold on the college’s mission to pursue truth, beauty and goodness. The 12.5 hours drive back home to Columbus, Nebraska, is not something her mom was completely thrilled about, however, upon their first visit to campus her mom agreed with Abigail saying, “you belong here.”
She appreciates the support structure her parents have given her as well as the ability to discover who she is. She is thrilled that college has been a learning and growing experience, but Abigail is not shy about remembering to call her parents twice a day.
