When you first meet California Epsilon Devin Rodriguez, you are entranced by her laid back and spunky spirit, as you would imagine a San Diego gal to have. Devin is actually a Las Vegas native who did not originally consider San Diego as a place to attend college; it was just a place to vacation spot.

Devin chose to attend San Diego State University in fall 2014 and immediately began to make an impact on the campus. Each spring, California Epsilon hosts an annual Scholarship Dinner to acknowledge the accomplishment of their sisters and thank the faculty or staff that supported the women. Not only was her professor impressed by this celebration, he was impressed by Devin. He nominated Devin as one of his top students for a position in the office of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PFSA) Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Randi McKenzie.

“Usually freshmen have jobs in the market or in food service on campus, but I have a great different opportunity. They accommodate my finals schedule, allow time for me to do homework, and it is a guaranteed job for four years.” Devin’s student assistant role started off as primarily office work, such as scheduling appointments and assisting with the Civil Core “Be Civil, Pass it On” campaign and quickly led to greater responsibility of writing letters to donors and assisting in development for the college. Devin has become an asset to the college with all the hard work she has put into her position.

Last year, as vice president of Philanthropy, Devin helped the chapter raise close to $1,000 at the Pie a Pi Phi event. “Take on leadership positions even if you’re hesitant because it keeps you exposed to other people in the house. So many opportunities are presented to you.” After her successful term on executive board, Devin is focused on obtaining an internship and has aspirations of being on the executive board for the PSFA College Council to represent and advocate for her peers.
