An Encouraging Message About Serving Your Community

“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something and I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.”  — Edward Everett Hale

MarlaThis quote resonated with me so much I wrote it down so I wouldn’t forget it during the rush of the holiday season. I don’t know about you, but I thrive on inspiration. I, too, need motivation and positive reminders. In my office I have two posters that hang as daily reminders. One is my, “At Pi Beta Phi, we believe in the power of reading,” poster, and the other says, “Make a difference. One candle may light a thousand.”  I can visualize this, can you? Imagine if each one of us touched one life, just as a flame lights a candle. We could light the world, one candle, one book, one child at a time.

At Pi Beta Phi, commitment to literacy and service has been, and will be, an integral part of our vision, mission and values. We have set a goal of impacting one million lives by our 150th anniversary in 2017. I know we can make it! If you haven’t, you must visit the Read > Lead > Achieve section on our website and Facebook page to see our progress meter. Each year, we ask that all Pi Phis, collegiate and alumnae, take at least one day to SERVE. To enrich lives through community service. Fraternity Day of Service is just one day, but this ONE day, has the potential to be significant. Whether you are one person, one chapter or one alumnae club, let’s make this Fraternity Day of Service count.

This year, Fraternity Day of Service is modeling the way, but we need each one of you to help. In Baltimore, Houston, Long Beach and Nashville, 20,000 books will be distributed to children in need. Collegians and alumnae of Pi Beta Phi, this is a chance to make a difference. But we need more. No matter where you are, stand up, join together, read to a child, give a book or volunteer. Help us make a difference.

One day … One child at a time … One Pi Beta Phi
